Two cats, two different worlds.

On our last trip to Masai Mara we left the first Serval trembling, hemmed in by a circle of jeeps. It was impossible to watch. Two days later, just a short drive away, we found this male entirely alone—hunting for a snake in the silence.

Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Serval (Leptailurus serval) relies on those massive “radar” ears to pinpoint prey in tall grass. They have the highest hunting success rate of all wild cats—but only when they have focus.

The crowding in the Mara is becoming a crisis for these sensitive animals. How do we balance tourism with the need for wild space?

This photo was taken in Tarangire national park in Tanzania, during last week. The Tarangire park is famous for its high density of elephants, as well as baobab trees. I hope that our generation will be more responsible with regards to the well being and preservation of those amazing animals.
